Spring term 2026

27th April 2026Lisa Thompson

The Spring term of 2026 has been a wonderful term – lots of learning, discovering and having fun every day!

In January we welcomed our 2 new members of staff, Annie and Caitlin! They have built lovely connections with the children and have become valuable members of our team. We look forward to them continuing their journey with us!

The snow and ice were a perfect start to our new year and we had lots of fun exploring and investigating it…..as well as lots of fun playing in it!

Everyone enjoyed our weekly sessions with Tiny Tweeties. There was lots of energy, laughter and learning whilst we had fun singing, dancing and moving! A very big thank you to Chris and Rachael!

In February we celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week, the theme being ‘This is my place’. Our older children went on walks around the local community to look at where they live and special places, whilst our younger children carried out activities to discover what made them happy and sad.

Oak Group and Cedar Group had a wonderful time exploring Forest School, learning new skills and wading through lots of muddy puddles, as well as climbing trees and making forest fairies. It was wonderful to see them growing in confidence week by week!

World Book Day was celebrated in March and we all wore our pyjamas to nursery for a day of ‘bedtime stories’. Their was lots of engagement with everyone talking about their favourite books and stories and we had lots of fun exploring some Julia Donaldson story trays.

We were very proud to announce that Oxclose Community Nursery School achieved the Maintaining Excellence Standard of the Better Health at Work Award in March. Thank you to Lorraine for all of her hard work as Wellbeing Lead.

We celebrated Chinese New Year, learning about this special festival and traditions. We enjoyed making colourful lanterns, looking at Chinese writing and symbols and sampling traditional food.

We also learned about the Hindu festival of Holi, the festival of colours, one of the most fun, colourful and lively festivals in the world. It was a very bright and colourful time in nursery!

We ended the Spring term by celebrating Easter at nursery. We held a huge Easter obstacle course in our garden all while balancing our decorated eggs!

It has been a wonderful, fun filled term – we now look forward to our summer term!

Autumn term 2025

4th January 2026Lisa Thompson

Autumn term 2025 has been such a positive start to the academic year!

Our new children grew in confidence as they became familiar with the nursery routine, the staff and their new environment. Lots of friendships were formed and the children learned to play together, to share and to take turns.

The autumn term is always an exciting term and we celebrated by learning about the colours, textures, smells and tastes of the beautiful, colourful season.

In October we celebrated World Mental Health Day and we focussed on the importance of looking after our thoughts and feelings.

We also collected donations in October for our local charity ‘Washington Community Food Project’. Your kindness and support made a huge difference to families in our community who are in need. Thank you!

The first of our parent stay and play sessions took part and we focussed on personal, social and emotional development. Thank you to everyone who came along. It was lovely to have you in nursery to promote the links between home and school.

In November we learned and remembered all those who served and sacrificed for our country. The children took part in special activities to help them understand the importance of Remembrance Day.

November 2025 brought snow and turned our garden into a winter wonderland! Everyone embraced the snowy weather and had lots of fun sledging down our hill!

This term we learned about harvest vegetables and had lots of fun chopping and tasting! We did some lovely cooking sessions, even making some lovely homemade soup – perfect for the winter weather!

Autumn term was Oak Group’s turn to experience Forest School. They enjoyed their weekly visits, were full of enthusiasm and were eager to explore. They worked very hard and definitely earned their hot chocolate at the end of each session! Well done Oak Group.

December obviously brought Christmas to Oxclose Community Nursery School! The children wrote their letters to Santa and we went out and about to post the letters to the North Pole. We were excited to receive a reply from Santa himself the following week!

Thank you to everyone who came along to our Christmas Craft sessions – there were some beautiful creations made and hopefully they will be treasured keepsakes for a long time to come!

Our nursery and gardens were turned into a Christmas wonderland in the last week of term. We hope you all enjoyed our beautiful fairy trail. Our school looked so pretty all lit up in the darkness.

And finally – our Christmas party was a huge success! Lots of fun, games and dancing. We even had a visit from the big man himself!

What a wonderful, exciting term we have had!

Summer term 2025

14th August 2025Lisa Thompson

What a wonderful summer term we have had!

As the term ends, we have been looking back and reflecting on what an amazing time we have had at Oxclose Community Nursery School in the summer of 2025.

  • In May we celebrated VE Day. The children made flags and sang songs to honour our past heroes whilst learning about the importance of peace and unity
  • We also celebrated Children’s Day in May. This year’s theme was ‘Stand up and speak up’ to build a bullying-free generation. Children came into school wearing their favourite outfits and made lots of noise in the garden with a musical parade.
  • May also saw us celebrate Mental Health Awareness week and we focussed on how to be a good friend and accessed lots of activities to promote good mental health.
  • This term we have been learning about mini beasts and children made their own bug hotels for creepy crawlies to live in. We had some very brave children who went into our shed to collect spiders!
  • We also celebrated ‘Alfie’s Day’ – a very special day in Oxclose Nursery School which we hold in memory of a very special little boy. The children got stuck into all kinds of messy play whilst raising funds for CHUF.
  • It was the turn of Red Group this term to visit Forest School. They enjoyed their weekly trips out to explore the woods!
  • Tiny Tweeties returned with more fun filled sessions of music and dance.
  • A popular topic this term has been learning about ‘people who help us’. We even had a visit from police officers and were able to go inside the police van! We also learned about the different roles in hospitals, vets and hairdressers.
  • SAFC Foundation of Light came to visit us in June and we had fun football sessions with our parents. Samson the Black Cat even came along for a visit! Lots of budding footballers in the making.
  • Everest and Skye our giant African snails returned to nursery this term along with their baby who we named Turbo. The children learned how to handle them correctly and how to prepare their food.
  • All of the sunny weather led to us talking about sunflowers and we studied the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh. We recreated his famous masterpiece!
  • Children learned about road safety and ventured out into the local community to look for safe places to cross the road.
  • We had a lovely trip to Herrington Park with our families and had lots of fun and games in the park.
  • Techno Tom came to visit us to talk about our theme of recycling. We made lots of recycled boats to sail in our canals.

It has been a wonderful fun filled term!
